Privacy Policy
At a glance
- We collect what you log on EatOutLog (restaurants, dishes, ratings, notes and photos), your account details, and some information from your device, so we can run the service and keep it safe.
- Other signed-in people can see what you post. Restaurants see totals and averages about their own restaurant, and paid plans also show individual visits there by username.
- We use your location only when you allow it.
- We don't sell your personal information.
- You can download or delete your data at any time from our Data Request page.
Who we are
EatOutLog is an app and website for logging what you ordered at restaurants and whether you'd order it again. It is run by Capypine LLC ("EatOutLog," "we," "us"). This policy covers the EatOutLog apps, the website at app.capypine.com, and the tools we offer restaurant owners and managers ("Restaurant Operators").
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details. Your email address and the account identifier from the service you sign in with (Google, Apple, or an email and password), the username you choose, and your date of birth, which we ask for only to confirm you're 13 or older and never show to anyone.
- Your profile. An avatar, or a profile photo if you upload one.
- What you log. The restaurants you visit, the dishes you order, your ratings and notes, and the dish, menu and receipt photos you add. Receipt photos are private to you.
- What you do with other people's posts. Comments, likes, follows, the restaurants you save to Want to go, and any reports you make.
- Restaurant Operator information. Details and documents you send when you claim a restaurant, and, if you subscribe, your subscription status from our payment processor. We never receive your card number.
- Purchases. If you buy Remove ads, the App Store or Google Play handles payment and tells us the purchase is valid, so it can be restored on a new phone.
- Messages to us. Anything you send when you contact us or report a problem.
Information collected automatically
- Device and security information. Information such as a device identifier and the IP address you sign in from, used to keep accounts secure and to stop banned people from returning.
- How you use EatOutLog. For example, which suggestions you open, which dishes appear in your feed, searches that find nothing, and the sort options you pick.
- Location. If you allow it, your device's location while you use the app, to show restaurants near you and, when you log a visit, to confirm location-based badges and spot fake check-ins. We don't track your location in the background.
- EatOutLog cards. If you scan one of our printed QR cards, we record that the card was scanned, the kind of device, and a code made from your connection that changes every day, so we can count scans without identifying you. If you then create an account, we note which card or restaurant brought you, and the restaurant sees only totals.
- Crash reports. Technical details when the app crashes, such as your device model and app version. They don't include what you've logged.
- Cookies on the website (see Cookies).
Information we work out from your activity
- Your Taste Profile. A summary of the places and dishes you like, how you rate, and your usual price range. It's private unless you choose to show it.
- Suggestions. People and places we think you'll like, and the suggestions you've dismissed.
- Your approximate home area, worked out from the restaurants you visit, for nearby features and for anonymous statistics we give restaurants.
How we use your information
- To run EatOutLog: saving and showing what you log, your profile, your feeds and search.
- To personalize it: Discover, suggested people and places, and your Taste Profile.
- To give restaurants insights about their own restaurant (see Who can see your information).
- To keep EatOutLog safe: moderating content, preventing fraud and fake accounts, enforcing bans, and checking that badges are earned fairly.
- To stay in touch: notifications you've turned on, emails about your account, and summaries such as a weekly digest if you leave them on.
- To show ads in the app and on the website (see Ads).
- To fix and improve the service, and to meet legal obligations.
Who can see your information
- Other signed-in people can see your username, avatar or profile photo, the dishes you post with their photos, ratings and notes, your comments, your badges, and the people you follow. People who follow you also see your visits and Want to go saves in their feed, which you can turn off in Settings. Your Taste Profile shows only if you turn it on.
- Anyone with a link you or someone else shares can see a short preview: a dish's name, photo, rating and restaurant, or a profile's username and avatar (and your Taste Profile summary, if you've made it visible). Profile photos never appear in these previews.
- Restaurants see totals and averages about their own restaurant. Restaurants on paid plans also see individual visits and ratings at their restaurant with the username they were posted under, just as they appear in the app. They never see your email, your location or your account details.
- Never shown to anyone: your email address, date of birth, receipt photos and location.
Anything others can see can be copied or shared by them, so post with that in mind.
Who we share information with
- Service providers that help us run EatOutLog: hosting and storage, sign-in, maps and place search, checking photos for inappropriate content, crash reporting, push notifications, email delivery, payment processing, and looking up the general area of an IP address to help catch fraud. They may use your information only to provide their service to us.
- Advertising partners, as described under Ads.
- Restaurants and the tools they choose, as described above. Restaurants can send statistics about their own restaurant to their own tools, and those statistics never identify individual diners.
- For legal and safety reasons, when we believe it's required by law or needed to protect the rights, property or safety of our users, the public or EatOutLog.
- If our business changes hands, for example in a merger or sale, your information may move to the new owner, who will remain bound by this policy until it's changed.
- When you ask us to, for example when you share a link or a picture of your Taste Profile.
We don't sell your personal information.
Ads
EatOutLog shows ads in the app and on the website through advertising partners such as Google. On the website, ads are personalized only if you accept in the cookie banner. In the app, ads may be personalized using your device's advertising identifier unless you limit that in your phone's settings, and where the law requires your consent first, such as in Europe, the app asks for it. If you're under 18, the ads you see are never personalized. You can remove ads from the app by buying Remove ads.
Cookies
The website uses a few essential cookies to keep you signed in, protect your account and remember your cookie choice. These are always on. Cookies that personalize ads are used only if you accept them in the cookie banner. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie Preferences at the bottom of every page. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we don't personalize ads or load website analytics.
Your choices and rights
In the app and on the website
- Turn location access on or off in your device's settings.
- Choose which notifications and emails you get in Settings.
- Choose whether followers see your visits and Want to go saves, and whether your Taste Profile is visible.
- Change your ad and cookie choices at any time.
Access, correct and delete
Wherever you live, you can see, download, correct or delete your information. Use the Data Request page: deleting your account happens straight away, and a download of your data is usually ready within a few days. Usernames can't be changed once set, so contact us if yours causes a problem.
US state privacy rights
Depending on your state, including California, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, to correct or delete it, and to opt out of its sale, of sharing for targeted advertising, and of profiling. We don't sell personal information. You can opt out of personalized ads on the website with Cookie Preferences or a Global Privacy Control signal, and in the app through your phone's ad settings. You can use these rights yourself or through an authorized agent, we may need to verify your identity first, and we won't treat you differently for using them.
European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland
We use your information to provide the service you signed up for, for our legitimate interests in keeping EatOutLog safe, improving it and showing non-personalized ads, with your consent (for example for personalized ads), and to meet legal obligations. You can access, correct, delete, restrict, object to or move your information, and withdraw consent at any time, by contacting us. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and what you've logged for as long as your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete what you've logged, including your photos, and remove your email and username. Records of how people use EatOutLog are kept only as long as they're useful, then deleted or turned into anonymous totals. If an account is banned for abuse, we keep a record of the ban so it can still be enforced after the account is deleted. If you tell us why you're leaving when you delete your account, we keep that answer without your account or anything that identifies you, and delete it after a year. Copies in our backups are removed as those backups expire.
International users
EatOutLog is run from the United States, and your information is stored and processed there. If you use EatOutLog from elsewhere, your information is transferred to the United States, where privacy laws may be different from those where you live. Where the law requires it, we use appropriate safeguards for these transfers.
Children
EatOutLog isn't for children under 13. We ask everyone for their date of birth when they sign up, and if we learn an account belongs to someone under 13, we delete it and its information.
Security
We protect your information with measures such as encryption in transit and access controls. No system is completely secure, so we can't guarantee the security of your information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also let you know in the app.
